What is a cashback credit card?
Cashback cards pay back a percentage of what you spend. In Hong Kong the rebate is usually credited to your card account, either straight away each month or in the bank's own currency that you spend against your bill.
How cashback works in Hong Kong
Some Hong Kong cards pay one flat rate on almost everything. Others pay a higher rate on categories you choose, on online spend or at set merchants, with a cap on the bonus each month or year.
Some higher rates need you to register for the offer or reach a minimum spend first. So match the categories and conditions to what you already spend.
Things to check
Read the exclusions. Bill payments, insurance, e-wallet top-ups and tax payments often earn no rebate.
Hong Kong cards charge interest of over 30% a year, so if you carry a balance the interest soon outweighs any cashback. If you would rather earn miles or points, compare rewards cards.
